Which Tax Credits Can I Claim?

Do I qualify for child tax credit?

If a taxpayer has a child or children, he or she may qualify for child tax credits. All the taxpayer has to do is prove that the child is a qualifying child and the modified adjusted gross income for the taxpayer does not exceed the phase out amount:

Do I qualify for additional child tax credit?

If the taxpayer qualifies for the child tax credit but receives less than the full amount, then part of the child tax credit may be refundable under the additional child tax credit rules. The taxpayer will receive the additional child tax credit if the calculation below comes out positive.

Do I qualify for education tax credits?

A taxpayer can claim the education tax credit for higher education only and if the tests below are met:

  • qualifying expenses
  • eligible educational institution
  • Income limits

  • no double benefit

After all the tests above are met, the taxpayer can decide if to claim the Hope tax credit or the Lifetime learning tax credit. You can only claim one of the two education tax credits, not both.
